Late 18th Century German Violin, Mittenwald
This is a late 1700s, circa 1780-1790 violin likely made in Mittenwald. It contains a handwritten label which reads, almost illegibly, Mathias Hornsteiner Mittenwald 1795. We cannot guarantee its authenticity in regards to it being made by this maker, but it is possible, given the workmanship, that it was made by a member of the Hornsteiner family. The price assigned to it is given to it based on the assumption that the violin was made by an anonymous maker. This violin has a spruce top and a two-piece bird’s eye maple back. Its tone can be described as dark, warm and full. It is in remarkable condition given its age.
